To ensure we stay competitive with our pricing and quality, I often like to do a grocery store comparison of the items in the Original Sized box and what the cost would look like if you bought the same exact items at a local grocery store. I like to do this comparison with a middle of the ground grocery store, nothing too expensive or too cheap.
Keep in mind, that a lot of the produce in the grocery store is coming from Mexico this time of year; it’s not guaranteed to be California grown, let alone US grown. This is due in part to Mexico’s favorable winter temperatures, especially in the Sonoran Desert, and also because of lower labor costs.
Since much of the produce in the grocery stores is coming from Mexico this time of year, it sits on a truck for a while before even crossing the border into the United States. It then sits in a warehouse, before it makes its way on to grocery store shelves, which may take a week or two.
Here is a breakdown of each item from this week’s box and the cost of it at the grocery store:
Organic Red Leaf Lettuce: $2.99 x 2 = $5.98
Organic Carrots: $3.29
Organic Leeks: $2.49
Organic Lacinato Kale: $2.79
Butternut Squash: $2.98 x 2 = $5.96
Organic Whole White Mushrooms: $2.99
Mini Red Potatoes: $3.99
Organic Baby Broccoli: $3.49 x 2 = $6.98
Cara Cara Orange: $.75 x 4 = $3.00
Satsuma Tangerines: $3.96 x 2 = $7.92
For a total of $45.39
Keep in mind, the base price of our original box is just $35.
We are able to keep our box price competitive because we are working directly with the California growers we buy from. By not working through a middle man, like a broker or foodservice house, we are able to ensure that we are getting the freshest produce delivered directly to us and then delivering it straight to you.
