If you customize your box every week, you’ve probably noticed fresh shiitake mushrooms on our availability list from week to week. These mushrooms are sourced from Mighty Cap Mushroom, located in Paso Robles, California. We had a chance to meet the owner, Chris Batlle, and tour his growing facility back in October of 2023. Since then, we have flourished a continued relationship with him, sourcing both fresh and dried mushrooms.
Chris began growing mushrooms in 2018 to improve his family’s health and wellness. Simultaneously in the same year, his wife was diagnosed with color cancer. This increased his desire to grow his own gourmet mushrooms because he wanted to provide a healthier lifestyle for his whole family while they were going through this challenging time.
Over the years, Chris’s passion project turned business expanded into the local food and wine industry, with chef’s eager to get their hands on these specialty mushrooms. He’s also expanded into offering a weekly and bimonthly Fresh Mushroom Subscription Box available for local pickup, as well as, at-home grow kits. From Chris himself, “Our mushrooms are sustainably grown in small batches on the best organic substrate to ensure that they are of the highest caliber. We believe that the love and quality can be tasted and is key to creating exceptional nutrient rich foods. This quality control is backed by our direct to chef customer service. One of the key components lost in the food service industry is knowing your farmer. We invest in our customer education to ensure understanding the complexities and importance of why we need each other, creating a symbiotic relationship.”
