Buzzwords around produce, like sustainable, non-GMO, and organic, have become increasingly common in the media. With so many labels to consider, it can feel more overwhelming than ever to know what’s “safe” to eat. At Talley Farms, our boxes include a mix of both conventional and organic produce, all grown right here in California – an important distinction for this day in age.
Why is “CA Grown” the most important label to us? California produces roughly one-third of the nation’s fruits and vegetables and upholds the strictest food safety standards in the country. Growers must follow regulations under the Produce Safety Rule, which establishes rigorous guidelines for growing, harvesting, packing, and handling produce to help prevent microbial contamination. Everything from agricultural water and soil amendments (fertilizer) to worker hygiene is carefully monitored under this rule. We specifically partner with growers who are PrimusGFS certified, a food safety program that requires regular audits evaluating growing and harvesting practices, facility sanitation, and overall food safety procedures. In addition, California’s Leafy Greens Marketing Agreement (LGMA) sets commodity-specific standards, such as water testing, field sanitation, and buffer zones, that go beyond federal requirements.
The state’s Department of Pesticide Regulation also enforces strict oversight of pesticide use for both conventional and organic farming. That’s right, even organic produce is sprayed with pesticides. Growers use licensed Pest Control Advisers (PCAs) to oversee the application of pesticides to any crops. PCA’s must complete college-level coursework in relevant sciences like biology, agriculture, or pest management, as well as pass comprehensive exams on laws, regulations, and pest management principles. To maintain their license, they are required to complete continuing education every two years, ensuring they stay up to date with evolving standards.
When purchasing produce from the grocery store, many items will have been grown outside of the United States, where growing standards and safety regulations are not as highly regulated. In other countries, organically grown produce may be more strictly regulated than conventional produce, but in California, both conventional and organic farming practices are held to the highest standards. The produce in your Talley Box is grown with utmost care, under the most rigorous food safety practices in the nation, so you can feel confident bringing it to your table. And don’t forget, the most important thing is to eat more produce!
