Farmer Feature: The Smith Family

Last week, we had the pleasure of touring Avila Valley Barn, guided by Raven Smith. Avila Valley Barn is a beloved second-generation farm, proudly owned and operated by the Smith family. The story begins in 1986, when Debbie Smith was hired by the DeVincenzo family to live on the farm and sell fresh fruit-alerting customers with the simple ring of a bell. At that time, the land was bare: no buildings, no trees-just a pop-up tent and boxes of produce Debbie had gathered that morning from nearby farms. Many locals might recognize the DeVincenzo name, known in the area for their work in orthodontics.

Fast forward to today, and the farm is a vibrant, multi-sensory experience. As you arrive, you’re welcomed by the smell of warm baked goods, garlic bread, and sun-ripened fruit. Bright displays of apples, peaches, cherries, onions, golden honey, and fresh flowers greet you, while the cheerful sounds of children playing and goats bleating fill the air. Every detail was thoughtfully designed by Debbie, a mother of seven, to create a place where families could connect, explore, and enjoy the simple joys of farm life.

Over the years, Debbie became a partner in the farm, eventually buying in and taking over ownership. Her children grew up immersed in the day-to-day operations-running tractor rides, the corn stand, produce area, and ice cream shop with help from their friends. Today, two of her children, twins Jake and Jesse Smith, are proudly continuing the family legacy, with Jake’s wife, Raven, joining them in carrying the vision forward.

There is something for everyone this time of year at Avila Valley Barn! You can participate in u-picks, hay rides, corn mazes, animal feeding, or just enjoying a delicious bite of roasted corn on the cob. Visit them daily between 9am-6pm!
